Oct 28, 2021· It means that the powertrain control module (PCM) perceives a high voltage signal from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) position sensor. The check engine code P0406 is triggered when the signal being sent back by the EGR position sensor to the PCM is higher than the specified range. The check engine light will activate as the PCM sets this code.

There are different designs of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems, but they all operate in a similar way. The EGR valve is a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) controlled valve that allows measured amounts of exhaust gasses to pass back into the cylinders to be burned with the air/fuel mixture.

+

The EGR rate is defined as the percentage of exhaust gases from the total gas mass induced into the engine. For example, an EGR rate of 33 % means that a third of the gas which enters the cylinders is actually exhaust gas and 67 % is fresh air. The higher the EGR rate the lower the NOx emissions levels.
